How can I Persevere in a Job Search that is Squashing My Self Esteem?

PersevereWe all have obstacles. Choosing to overcome those obstacles and persevering is what makes the difference between those who shine their light and those who wander. Don’t take it personally. Searching for a new job is really a sales process and many of us aren’t inherently good at sales. Adding to that, selling yourself is one of the most difficult things on the planet!

3 Tips for Persevering During a Job Search:

1) Know your Strengths & Weaknesses: Determine what you are doing right and what areas you have opportunities to improve. Positive self-talk in the areas that are going well for you can go a long way. Get help in the specific areas where you feel challenged.

2) Don’t let your Job Search define you: Most of us put our heart & soul into finding a new job opportunity, as we should. That said, do everything you can to maintain a life outside of your search. This could include going to the gym, extracurricular activities, hobbies, cooking or anything else that you know you do well. Don’t go into a job search with an empty bucket (aka How Full Is Your Bucket? Positive Strategies for Work and Life).

3) Get help sooner rather than later: Some people spend 6 months trying to go it alone in their job search without ever asking for help. By then they feel pretty beat up with rejection letters and a lack of offers. If you’re feeling beat up by your job search it might be time to ask an expert for help. Someone who is on your side teaching, coaching and encouraging you during your job search can be an invaluable resource.
